Trail Passport is a hiking app. It tracks which trails you walk so it can stamp your book and run missions. This page says what we collect and why.
What we collect
- A device id. The app creates a random id on first launch. That is how your stamps and miles stay on that phone. We do not require an Apple or Google login.
- Location while you hike. GPS is used to match you to a trail, fill in coverage, and award stamps and missions. We are not building a live “where is this person right now” map for other users.
- Trail progress. Percent complete, the path you covered, miles, and which missions you joined or finished.
- Optional contact info. If you join a special mission (a shop reward), you may give a display name, email, and phone so the shop and we can honor the reward. Marketing email only if you opt in.
Where it lives
Progress is stored on your phone so hiking still works offline. When you have a connection, it is also saved on our servers (currently Supabase) so stamps and reports are not lost and so a town can see trail use in aggregate.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not put your raw hike on a public map with your name.
- Shop partners only see what they need for a mission you joined (usually that you completed it and, if you chose to share it, your name).
Notifications
The app may send a local or push notification when you earn a stamp or finish a mission. You can turn those off in your phone settings.
Kids
The app is meant for general audiences on local trails. We do not knowingly collect contact information from children. A parent or guardian should join special missions if a child is using the app.
How long we keep it
We keep hike and stamp data so your book and town reports still work. If you delete the app, the on-phone copy is gone. The server copy may remain until you email us and ask us to remove it.
Your choices
- Location permission can be set to while-using or denied. Without location, stamps and coverage will not work.
- You can skip special missions if you do not want to share a name or email.
- Email john@trailpassport.app to ask what we have for your device or to request deletion.
Changes
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we will update this page and the date above.
